5th Grade - Water for South Sudan

We are so proud of our 5th Grade students who in the fall read A Long Walk to Water as part of MESA's One Book One Grade program and then took it upon themselves to raise money for Water for South Sudan.  These 5th Graders, the teachers and staff at Jordan/Jackson along with MESA organized a fundraising walk in November which raised over $13,000.  With that donation, the students of Jordan/Jackson were able to build a well at Ajiekdit Primary School in Kangi Wau, South Sudan.  This week we received a letter from Water for South Sudan stating that Jordan/Jackson Elementary School sponsored the 336th well.

Dear Mrs. McCarthy and students:

We are pleased to report that Water for South Sudan has drilled the well that you sponsored.  We have now drilled over 300 wells since 2005 -- and yours was our 336th well.  We are deeply grateful for the continued support of donors like you which enables our work.

WFSS will continue to provide access to clean water and hygiene education, led by our South Sudan team.  Although parts of South Sudan continue to experience unrest, we have been able to continue drilling wells safely.  Our work continues to provide grassroots development and sustainability for rural villages and schools.  The installation of a new well can also serve as a starting point for conflict resolution between different groups, bringing peace and stability.

Attached please find photos of the well that your donation helped drill.  Your well is located at the Ajiekdit Primary School in Kangi Wau South Sudan.  The village chief is Malou Akech Malou.  GPS coordinates are 8.300397, 27.801872.

Thank you for your support and generosity, which is now helping to provide fresh, clean water and a new future to the students of Ajiekdit Primary School in South Sudan.
